The recognition of outstanding academic contributions to the University is always appropriate and necessary. The addition of the title of "Distinguished Professor" provides an avenue for such recognition that can be awarded to qualified faculty members upon recommendation of their peers and the administration. This special academic title is intended to recognize a limited number of outstanding Professors for whom endowed chairs or professorships are otherwise unavailable.
